Vice Chancellor’s Overview

The PNG University of Technology Annual Report 2023 highlights another year of significant institutional progress. University governance was further strengthened in accordance with the Higher Education General Purpose Act 2014, with Council membership reduced from 26 to 13 members and professional expertise strengthened across key fields. The University also welcomed a new Chancellor, Mr. Sam Koim.

The Council and Executive Management continued implementing the Strategic Plan 2020–2024, with particular emphasis on teaching quality, research, accreditation and industry relevance. Progress continued towards engineering accreditation while improvements were made to equipment, facilities, practical training and interactive teaching. Research activity expanded alongside increased postgraduate enrolment, while student intake grew by 4.5%, supported largely through online delivery.

Administrative performance also improved through strategic outsourcing and stronger campus maintenance. Upgrades to dormitories, buildings, grounds, street lighting and security contributed to a safer and more attractive campus environment.

The University's financial position remained strong, achieving 4.5% growth in 2023. Cost-reduction measures supported further development while property revaluation contributed to a positive net worth of K340.20 million. The University remains focused on expanding online and accredited programs and strengthening its role as a regional hub for science and technology.
