Vice Chancellor’s Overview

The PNG University of Technology Annual Report 2021 documents the University's continued implementation of the Strategic Plan 2020–2024 during its third year. Despite challenges caused by COVID-19, progress was made in strengthening institutional performance and governance. The Strategic Plan was expanded to include a dedicated Student domain focused on improving the study environment, accommodation and employment support.

Significant progress was achieved in academic excellence through engineering accreditation and the benchmarking of Business Studies, Architecture, Construction Management and Agriculture programs. Research investment of K800,000 supported the expansion of postgraduate studies to approximately 170 students including 15 PhD candidates. Academic staff and postgraduate researchers also contributed to increased research output with approximately 90 peer-reviewed publications annually since 2020. Preparations for online course delivery were also advanced.

The University's financial position strengthened with an operating surplus of approximately K10 million and a fourth consecutive year of unqualified audits. Resources supported infrastructure maintenance, student accommodation and institutional development. Student enrolment remained close to 3,000 with increased demand supported by the Government's Higher Education Loan Program. Construction of a new Student Dining Hall also commenced.
