Abstract

The PNG University of Technology Annual Report 2020 marks the first comprehensive annual report of the University and comes at an important period of renewed institutional direction. In July 2020, PNGUoT launched its Strategic Plan 2020–2024, establishing a clear pathway towards its vision of developing world-class technocrats through high-quality experiential teaching, research and the application of science, technology and innovation to real-world challenges.

The University's strategic direction is built around seven foundational pillars: institutional leadership and governance; academic excellence; research, innovation and training; organisational effectiveness and performance; access, externalisation and infrastructure; financial sustainability; and community, industry and international partnerships. These priorities are supported by values centred on ethics, professionalism, diversity, inclusivity, innovation and institutional pride. The University also seeks to develop graduates who are lifelong learners, critical thinkers, effective communicators, culturally aware, morally responsible and technologically capable.

During 2020, significant progress was made in academic quality and accreditation, particularly in engineering programs, which received provisional accreditation from Engineers Australia. Quality assurance initiatives were strengthened while industry partnerships supported investment in laboratory equipment. PNGUoT also maintained a substantial postgraduate and research programme covering agriculture, forestry, fisheries, energy, engineering, environmental sciences, climate change, information technology and other fields. The University accelerated the digital transformation of its academic and administrative systems through platforms including UNI 10, iChris and Google Classroom. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated online teaching and required major investment in internet connectivity and campus Wi-Fi infrastructure.

Student enrolment increased significantly during the year, creating additional pressure on accommodation and infrastructure. At the same time, financial savings from bringing student catering services in-house enabled greater investment in infrastructure maintenance, research, ICT, library services and campus security.

This report provides an important record of PNGUoT's activities, achievements, challenges and priorities during 2020.
